Robots Rumbling: Student Builders to Meet for Annual Grand Showdown
4th Annual BattleBots IQ™ National Competition at Universal Studios Orlando, April 13-16, 2005
Imagine this: Two robots squaring off against one another in an arena much like the Roman Gladiators did centuries ago. However, this won’t be simply a matter of strength and endurance. What makes this contest even more interesting is that the robots will be designed, built and driven by students in middle school, high school, and college.
The games and fun will begin for real on April 13th, when over 120 teams from schools around the country will begin their annual face-off in the BattleBots IQ™ National Competition. Guided by teachers and mentors and supported by the BattleBots IQ Curriculum, these teams have been working on their robots throughout the school year. Now it's the Final Test! Can their robot survive and prevail in a showdown with another robot, then receive the necessary re-hab to return again for another bout (in an hour!)?
According to BattleBots IQ CEO Nola Garcia, "The student robot builders of today are the innovators of tomorrow. They begin working with an idea and a pile of parts. They experience the thrill of seeing their inventions come to life and responding to their control and direction -- it's hard work, but a lot of fun as well. In the process of robot building, students' imaginations are captured while they design, build and compete with their own robotic creations, also gaining practical knowledge of math, science, engineering and manufacturing. You can see inventing better robots as a metaphor for inventing better lives: these students definitely exhibit the skills and attitudes that they need for future success, and will be leaders in the American workforce of the future."
Teams are coming to the BattleBots IQ National Competition from middle schools, high schools, vocational schools, colleges and universities, and competitors range in age from 12-22. Among the registered participants, 23% are female, demonstrating the growing interest and prowess of young women in the fields of science and engineering.
The teams will compete in one or more of three divisions with two age classes:
- TableTop, the 12 pound task-oriented division
- Mini Class, the 15 pound battling robot division making its national debut at this Competition
- Large Class, the 120 pound battling robot division
- College Large Class, the 120 pound battling robot division for college students
Among the celebrities from the worlds of education and science who will be taking part in the Annual Competition are John Winn, Florida's Commissioner of Education, and Sharon Burnette, the Governor of Florida's Teacher-in-Residence. Visitors from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory include Richard Petrus and Kevin Watson, both from the Mars Exploration Rovers team, who will be among the competition's judges, along with Col. Jose Negron, USAF (ret), the Program Manager of the 2004 DARPA Grand Challenge.
Other judges are Amy Sun of MITLabs; William Garcia de Quevedo of Zymequest, a mentor, former competitor and MIT graduate; Jim Smentowski of RobotMarketplace.com, a mentor as well as a giant in the world of robotics; and Dr. Peter Drewes, Program Manager for Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC), the largest employee-owned research and engineering firm in the United States.
Completing the judging panel are Brian Nave, Sr. Design Engineer with Contemporary Machinery & Engineering Services Inc., who is also co-host of the DIY Network show "Robot Rivals" and organizer of the annual Battle Beach event in Daytona Beach FL; and Joanne Pransky, The World's First Robotic Psychiatrist®, and the U.S. Associate Editor for Industrial Robot Journal and the new International Journal of Medical Robotics and Computer Assisted Surgery.
Early check-in and safety and technical inspections begin on Tuesday, April 12th. The Competition will wrap up with award presentations in the afternoon of Saturday, April 16th.
About BattleBots IQ
BattleBots IQ (BBIQ) is the educational program created by the producers of the wildly successful BattleBots® television series in which homemade, remote controlled robots face-off in competition. As the television show grew in popularity, so did the number of student fans who wanted to build competitive robots of their own. It soon became evident that this activity, the sport of robots in competition, also had the potential to make a powerful and positive educational impact.
In 2001, the creators of BattleBots® initiated BattleBots IQ™ with three components:
- A Robotics Curriculum, based on the National Curriculum Standards and Massachusetts Institute of Technology's (MIT) mechanical engineering methodology;
- Teacher Training Institutes around the country; and
- An annual National Competition where students showcase their custom built robots as they compete for top honors.
Institutional and corporate sponsors have a vested interest in BattleBots IQ. Not only does BBIQ help to create intelligent, bright, self-confident kids with a full palette of solution-building skills, but BattleBots IQ is training a workforce who will know how to trouble shoot, problem solve and invent new technology, which is exactly the kind of employee corporations are looking for today. BattleBots IQ: Changing the Way America Educates!

NEW BATTLEBOTS IQ WEIGHT CLASS
For the 2005 competition, BBIQ has added a new weight class for BattleBots weighing less than 15 lbs. This new class is called the "Mini Class". The original 120 lb. BattleBots are now called the "Large Class".
The Mini Class Bots are designed to be less expensive to build and support than the Large Class Bots (and of course they're much easier to transport!). The Mini Class Bots use a separate and smaller combat arena than the Large Class Bots. The Minis also have some different design requirements and allowances than the Large bots, so there is a separate Mini Class Tech Regs document. These Mini Class Tech Regs will be posted shortly.

BATTLEBOTS IQ PNEUMATICS UPDATE
An important message for those of you using pneumatics in your BBIQ BattleBot. BattleBots Inc. has been working with a leading paintball systems manufacturer to provide an off-the-shelf pneumatic supply system that fully complies with the BBIQ Tech Regs.
This unit is called the BBIQ 150 Power Pack. The complete system includes an integrated tank (various sizes), on-off valve, pressure reliefs, regulator and gauges. You'll have to add all the downstream components such as hoses, purge valve, control valves and actuators, so there's still lots of ways to show your creativity and workmanship.
The complete unit costs $290.00. The price without the tank is $170.00. The unit is available from Smart Parts Engineering, and more information will shortly be posted on their website (http://www.smartparts.com/). However, if you want information immediately, call Dave Brewer at Smart Parts at (724) 532-4610.
While using the BBIQ 150 Power Pack is not required, it is highly recommended. Using it will simplify the inspection of your bot's pneumatic system and increase the likelihood that the pneumatics will pass Safety/Tech Inspection.
One final note: If your BBIQ bot uses pneumatics, send an email to Nola Garcia at nola@battlebots.com. This will help us plan our requirements for safety personnel and on-site Nitrogen gas supplies.

HI-LO BATTLEBALL
BATTLEBOTS IQ is introducing a new mechanical challenge at the San Francisco event. We know you will be busy testing drive trains and mending mangled metal, but we think you are capable of doing more!
A lot more.
BBIQ in cooperation with GEARS Educational Systems, is hosting a tabletop robot challenge called HI-LO BATTLEBALL. This is a game of mechanical madness and convoluted strategy in which sixteen BBIQ teams put their inventive skills "On the Table" in a 40 hour endurance test of mechanical skill and engineering excellence.
This double elimination, table top action promises to be fun and furious as 4 teams compete simultaneously in an attempt to push, pick, place and throw 64 game playing pieces into and out of the game field. The two teams with the highest and the lowest point total respectively will advance to the winners bracket.. One winning strategy even includes driving your mechanized model off the table!
» Download an illustrated description of the game and playing rules here.
Sixteen BBIQ teams will each be given a GEARS-IDS™ Invention and Design System kit. This kit is packed with enough metal, motors, pneumatics and electronic controls to build a competitive 12 lb. Game playing "Mechanical-Athlete". The recipe for winning is simple; add some basic physics concepts, a little mathematical reasoning, a few dozen man hours of hard work and a lot of creative thinking and take home top honors in this fast paced game of strategy and skill.
THE SCHEDULE:
Friday, April 4th
Sixteen teams will attend a game explanation and demonstration session and will receive their GEARS-IDS™ Invention and Design System kit
Sunday, April 6th from 8-10AM
Sixteen teams will meet in the middle of the BattleBox to determine which student teams will walk away with bragging rights, trophies, and free SolidWorks software as their just reward for table top engineering excellence.
We at BBIQ invite everyone to attend the Table Top Robot event and support these young competitors by sharing in their excitement and cheering their efforts to demonstrate their creativity and talent. We think you will discover that games like HI-LO BATTLBALL are the perfect training exercise for varsity level combat robotics, and it’s safe enough for a school environment.

IMPORTANT BATTLEBOTS IQ EVENT DETAILS
BattleBots is excited to announce that the 2003 BattleBots IQ Tournament has been scheduled to take place from April 4th through April 6th, 2003 at Mare Island, California. Mare Island, a former naval facility, is located right outside of Oakland California in the San Francisco Bay Area. While this is a substantial change from what most of you have been expecting, we feel that California will serve as an excellent venue for the second installment of the BattleBots IQ Tournament Series. The 2002 BattleBots IQ Tournament at Universal Studios Orlando was a resounding success, and we look forward to another great IQ competition this year in California.
Please accept our sincere apologies for any inconvenience that this may cause for your teams. We regret that the timing of this announcement may cause you to change gears on short notice.
